Okinawan Sakura, Wahiawa, Hawai'i  Honolulu Chapter 56

Membership Luncheon

15 September 2013

Ikebana International Honolulu Chapter 56 held its Membership luncheon with 90 members at the Oahu Country Club in the lovely and breezy Nuuanu Valley.  Exhibitors were to incorporate their hobbies into their arrangement.  Seven exhibitors accepted this challenge incorporating jewelry, pottery, weaving, quilting, collage and pastel into their exhibits. In addition, each table was given 10 minutes to make their own centerpiece from materials provided.

The presentation after lunch was given by three of our newest teachers demonstrating an arrangement typical of their schools with Ikenobo, Sogestu and Koryo Shoteiha represented.  All were also asked to do an arrangement using hala leaves and carnations as well.  Diana Salansky demonstrated an Ikenobo Shoka Ishuike (one material) arrangement with Bird of Paradise, and a Jiyuka (free style) representing the sunset over the lava fields of the island of Hawaii.  Earl Shimabukuro created two Sogetsu free style arrangements in vases he made.  And Itsuko Tsujino showed us a beginning Seika arrangement from the Koryu Shoteiha school using a split branch rather than a kenzan, along with two free style arrangments.
