II Chapter 56 member Carol Nagano taught
ten students the basics of the traditional Japanese
art of Kumihimo, or braiding. The word kumihimo
means to gather or combine cord or thread and was used
historically to lace samurai armor and bind the obi
over kimono. Today it is used more often
in decorative arts. Carol taught the class how
to set up the standing loom and helped everyone make a
simple lei of eyelash yarn and rat-tail cord.
