Ikebana International Honolulu Chapter 56 is pleased to welcome Kika Shibata, Riji of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana, as guest artist for our 50th anniversary celebration. Mrs. Shibata began her ikebana studies at the age of four in Japan under her mother, Shoka Narimatsu. After moving to the United States, she continued her apprenticeship under her mother and also returned regularly to Japan to study under Headmistress Kasumi Teshigahara of the Sogetsu School. After receiving her teacher's certificate in l967, Mrs. Shibata went on to earn the prestigious title of Riji, the highest degree offered by the Sogetsu School. Her creativity and outstanding work in ikebana have earned her numerous honors including her appointments as the West Coast Area Coordinator of Sogetsu North America in 1996 and the President of Ikebana Teacher Federation in 1997.

Currently Mrs. Shibata serves as the Director of Sogetsu San Jose-South Bay Branch and actively participates in Ikebana International. Because she specializes in unique line designs that enhance not only the home setting but also work environments, her talents are highly sought after by banks, restaurants and hotels. She is frequently invited to conduct demonstrations, teach classes and workshops, and create ikebana arrangements and sculptures throughout the United States.

Mrs. Shibata owns and operates Ikebana Arts, a store and gallery located in San Jose, California, where people who love Japanese flower arranging can experience the joy of ikebana. She also conducts ikebana classes in the Bay Area and offers special classes for children at the Tachibana Japanese Language School.

Ikebana International Honolulu Chapter 56 is thrilled to have Shibata Sensei participate in our Golden Anniversary Celebration. For this milestone event she will share her ikebana talents by ~

  • Conducting an ikebana demonstration as part of our gala luncheon held at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort

  • Creating an ikebana sculpture for our floral exhibition held at the Academy Art Center at Linekona

  • Conducting two educational workshops at Tokai University for our chapter members and for Japanese language teachers selected to participate in these special classes
