Plastic Fencing Hana Dome Workshop
9 March 2025
Komon Sensei Earl Shimabukuro conducted an unconventional
ikebana workshop using plastic fencing material used
on construction sites. His emphasis was to use the
orange fencing material as a Hana Dome or a type of
stabilizing fixture which can be a part of the overall
arrangement. Fifteen
members attended the Sunday March 9, 2025, workshop at
the Moanalua Gardens Missionary Church. Participants
were given plastic fencing, chop sticks, wire, two
small nageire vases, green Midolino, Gerbera Daisy,
Babies Breath, and Alstromeria. Everyone brought their
own greenery. Following Sensei Earl’s demonstration,
everyone was encouraged to “think outside the box” and
create what they felt. Following an opportunity to
photograph their arrangements, Sensei Earl asked
everyone to explain their inspiration. He provided a
positive and productive critique to each arrangement.
Many agreed this workshop was a great learning
experience. Those ikebanist who study Ohara were able
to keep to their school’s principles and still create
delightful free styles.
Everyone agreed that this was an inspiring
workshop and is anxious to learn more.
