Oshibana
Workshop

November 2024
Sensei May Hiraoka-Tomita led an oshibana
workshop, creating pictures using pressed flowers
and other botanical materials. This art form
originated in the 16th century as one
discipline used by the samurai to promote patience,
harmony with nature, and concentration skills. Twelve
members were provided with kits which included pre-cut
paper towels, tempura paper, special weight card
board, tweezers, toothpicks, and a glue holder.
Participants learned to prep fresh materials which
were placed between layers of their kit papers and
then microwaved at certain powers for 60 seconds. The
process maintained the vibrancy of the flowers and
leaves. Each member created two note cards. There was
a selection of punch shapes like flowers and
dragonflies which could be used on the petals or
leaves. Final
products were laminated to preserve their amazing
artwork. The program committee is grateful to May
Sensei for the enormous amount of preparation work she
did for this highly successful workshop.
