The Japanese Culture
Center of Hawaii (JCCH) held a cultural week-long
day camp program called Tanoshii Hawaii Keiki
Summer Camp. The multi-day program offered
hands-on learning of Japanese and local culture
through music, arts, crafts, food, language,
traditions, and history. On June 28th, six
volunteers from II56 conducted an ikebana workshop
on the last day for 42 campers, ages 8 – 13. An
educational brief on safety, the definition of
Ikebana, and its history, were given; followed by
an explanation of key points of the arrangement.
Campers were given a Fuji mum, as a focal flower,
along with pompons or mini carnations, and Million
Stars, as supporting flowers. Greens consisting of
Podocarpus and Mickey Mouse clippings were placed
randomly across six tables. Here are some of their
